Packed with wonders, the once colonial outpost of Kuching is the capital of the East Malaysian state of Sarawak. It is the largest city on the island of Borneo, and the fourth largest city in Malaysia.
In the 19th century, Kuching was ruled by the Brooke family — a British dynasty known as the ‘White Rajahs’.
Despite the development that has taken place since then, the old enclave where the city started remains as appealing as ever. The riverfront is chock-a-block with old Chinese shop-houses built in the same style and with the same specifications as their contemporaries in Singapore and Penang. The look is redolent of Raffles as it was Sir Stamford who introduced the covered walkways stretching from front door...
