Over the October long weekend, I was on call for the hospital. If I had any illusions about getting a rest and doing some gardening, reality was about to strike.
The 2am callout was followed by a ward round and heavy Saturday morning surgery. I usually try to keep Saturday mornings brief. No chit chat, no preventive care, no long consultations — tell me the problem and we’ll sort out the rest next week. But the succession of sick (but not too sick) kids was interrupted by a patient with chest pain, a counselling session following a domestic dispute, and a seriously ill patient with pneumonia.
